many of the West Coast sailors heading for the Panama
Canal and who in the past have bypassed El Salvador.
Juan Wright, the owner, and his family were one of the
14 largest landowners in El Salvador until the end of the
civil war in 1992. Before the land reform he owned all
the land around the marina and employed as many as
10,000 people to farm the land. Although the system
might not seem fair to us, in his defense one must say the
people were probably better of back then. The harvests
were more successful and he operated schools and
medical clinics for his employees. Now we see many of
the former farm buildings in shambles and the harvests
are reduced to where they can barely sustain a livelihood
for the members of the cooperative.
All the boats here are on moorings as opposed to the
floating docks we are used in the USA. Panga service to
shore is available every hour but many people, us
included use their own dinghies to get to shore. The
marina offers a restaurant, pool, showers, a small store,
a computer room with internet access and a work room
for doing things like sewing projects. Every Tuesday and
Friday a van is available to go into Usulutan to do our
shopping.

Buergerkrieges in 1992. Vor der Landreform besass er
alles Land rund um den Hafen und beschaeftigte bis zu
10?000 Angestellte um das Land zu bewirtschaften. Fuer
unsere Begriffe scheint das System nicht fair zu sein aber
leider scheint es doch das die Angestellten frueher besser
dran waren. Die Ernten waren besser und Juan betrieb
Schulen und Kliniken fuer seine Angestellten. Heute sehen
wir viele der Landwirtschaftsgebaeude am zerfallen und die
Ernten koennen kaum alle Mitglieder der Kooperation
ernaehren.
Hier sind alle Boote an fixen Ankern befestigt und nicht an
Stegen wie wir uns dies in den USA gewoehnt sind. Ein
Taxiboot steht jede Stunde zur Verfuegung um uns an Land
zu bringen. Viele Gaeste benuetzen allerding ihr eigenes
Beiboot um an Land zu gehen. Der Club hat ein Restaurant,
Pool, Duschen, einen kleinen Laden, einen Komputerraum
mit Internetzugang und einen Hobbyraum zum Naehen oder
aehnliches. Jeden Dienstag und Freitag fuehrt uns ein
Minivan nach Usulutan um Einkaeufe zu erledigen.
